2025 Field of Study Rules | Pathway to PR

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Canada 2025 — What You Need to Know

What is the PGWP?

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows graduates of eligible Canadian designated learning institutions (DLIs) to work in Canada after graduation. It is an open work permit — you can work for any employer. Length depends on your program length and eligibility.

2025 PGWP Changes — Field of Study Requirements

IRCC introduced field of study requirements for PGWP eligibility (2024/2025). Many college and university programs must now be in eligible fields such as STEM, healthcare, trades, and agriculture. Some programs are no longer eligible for PGWP. Master's and PhD graduates are generally exempt from the field restriction. If you are planning to study, confirm PGWP eligibility before enrolling. VMC advises on current rules.

PGWP Duration Rules

  • Program 8 months to less than 2 years: PGWP length usually matches program length.
  • Program 2 years or more: PGWP can be up to 3 years.
  • Combined programs: If you completed two eligible programs (each at least 8 months) within 2 years, you may get a PGWP based on combined length (up to 3 years).

Eligibility Requirements

You must have completed an eligible program at a DLI, maintained full-time status (with limited exceptions), applied within 180 days of receiving your final marks, and have a valid study permit when you apply. Your program must meet current PGWP eligibility (including field of study where applicable).

How to Apply

You must apply from inside Canada within 180 days of the date you received written confirmation (e.g. transcript, letter) that you completed your program. Apply online; you will need your completion letter/transcript, passport, and payment. VMC helps graduates prepare complete applications.

PGWP Extension

PGWP is normally issued once per person. From time to time IRCC has announced public policies allowing certain PGWP holders to extend. Check IRCC's website for current measures. VMC keeps clients informed of extension options.

PGWP to PR Pathway

Canadian work experience on a PGWP can lead to permanent residence through Express Entry (Canadian Experience Class), PNP streams, or category-based draws. VMC guides graduates from PGWP to PR.

What If PGWP Is Refused?

Refusals can occur due to program ineligibility, missed deadline, or incomplete application. VMC analyzes refusal letters, addresses officer concerns, and helps you reapply or explore other work permit or PR options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eligible programs at designated learning institutions (DLIs) qualify, but from late 2024 onward IRCC introduced field of study requirements for many programs. STEM, healthcare, trades, agriculture, and other in-demand fields are eligible; some other programs may no longer qualify. Master's and PhD graduates are generally exempt from the field restriction. VMC confirms your program's eligibility before you rely on PGWP.
If your program was 8 months to 2 years, your PGWP length usually matches the program length. If your program was 2 years or more (or you combined two eligible programs), you can get a PGWP of up to 3 years. The exact length is at the officer's discretion based on your program.
PGWP is typically issued only once per person. Some public policies have allowed extensions in the past; check current IRCC updates. After PGWP expires, you may qualify for other work permits (e.g. LMIA, PNP) or permanent residence pathways.
If you applied for a PGWP before your study permit expired and you had the right to work off-campus during your studies, you may be on implied status and able to work full-time while waiting for the PGWP decision. Specific conditions apply — VMC can confirm your situation.
If you completed two eligible programs (each at least 8 months) within 2 years, you may qualify for a PGWP based on the combined length, potentially up to 3 years. Each program must meet PGWP eligibility. VMC can assess your credentials.
Yes. PGWP gives you Canadian work experience that can lead to PR through Express Entry (Canadian Experience Class), provincial nominee programs (PNP), or category-based draws. Many graduates use this pathway.
VMC specializes in PGWP refusals. We review the refusal letter, address eligibility issues (e.g. program eligibility, field of study, timing of application), and help you reapply or explore other options.
