  • Job offer CRS points removed — March 2025; job offers no longer add Express Entry CRS points.
  • LMIA fraud crackdown — Stricter compliance and verification by ESDC/IRCC.
  • Bridging OWP eligibility — Eligibility rules updated; we can confirm your situation.

Which Work Permit Do I Need?

Three key questions: (1) Do you have a job offer from a Canadian employer? If yes, you may need an LMIA-based or LMIA-exempt permit. (2) Are you a recent graduate from a Canadian DLI? You may qualify for a PGWP. (3) Is your spouse in Canada on a work or study permit? You may qualify for a spousal open work permit. VMC guides you through the right stream based on your situation.

LMIA — Labour Market Impact Assessment

An LMIA is a document from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) that confirms a Canadian employer may hire a foreign worker. Streams include high-wage, low-wage, agricultural, Global Talent Stream, and seasonal. Processing times in 2025 vary; VMC provides current estimates. VMC assists employers with LMIA applications and workers with the subsequent work permit application.

Open Work Permits

PGWP — For graduates of eligible programs at designated learning institutions. Duration depends on program length; 2025 field of study requirements apply. Spousal OWP — When your spouse or partner holds a valid work or study permit (eligibility depends on NOC and permit type). IEC — International Experience Canada for youth from eligible countries. Vulnerable Worker OWP — For workers in abusive or exploitative situations.

Inside Canada vs Outside Canada

You can apply for a work permit from inside Canada if you meet certain conditions (e.g., valid status, eligible stream). Applications from outside Canada are processed by the visa office responsible for your country of residence. VMC assists with both.

Work Permit to PR Pathways

Canadian work experience can lead to permanent residence through Express Entry (CEC stream), PNP streams for workers, and TR to PR public policies when available. VMC helps you plan from work permit to PR.

VMC serves clients seeking work permits in Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, Edmonton, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Montreal, Halifax, and across Canada. Virtual consultations available nationwide and internationally.
